This water-free solution contains 0.5% pure Retinol, an ingredient that can reduce the appearances of fine lines, of photo damage and of general skin aging. While Retinol has been studied extensively, it is irritating to the skin and newer technologies exist that mimic the visible effects of Retinol without causing skin irritation. For this reason, we generally recommend using Granactive Retinoid 2% or Granactive Retinoid 5% instead of this formula.

The Ordinary’s portfolio of retinoids includes the following formulations:

Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (Moderate Strength, No Irritation)
Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane (Moderate Strength, No Irritation)
Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane (High Strength, No to Low Irritation)
Retinol 0.2% in Squalane (Low Strength, Moderate Irritation)
Retinol 0.5% in Squalane (Moderate Strength, High Irritation)
Retinol 1% in Squalane (High Strength, Very High Irritation)

Caution: Retinol can cause significant irritation, redness and peeling, especially around the eyes and mouth, in the early stages of treatment while skin builds tolerance. If you have not used high-strength retinol formulas in the past, we strongly recommend that you start your retinol regimen with our Retinol 0.2% in Squalane and adjust to higher strengths of Retinol 0.5% in Squalane and Retinol 1% in Squalane as your skin builds tolerance. You will achieve the same end results without the unpleasant redness and peeling along the way.

Note: Water can affect the stability of retinol. Additionally, plant oils in retinol formulations can trigger lipid peroxidation and can impair retinol integrity. This formula does not contain water, silicones, plant oils or alcohol.

EU Shipping Note: We are able to ship this product within the European Union. However, please note that the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety has published an opinion on April 20, 2016 suggesting that Retinol content of cosmetics should be limited to 0.3% as summarized on page 67 of the publication listed below. While this opinion has not yet affected regulatory restrictions, it may in the near future and such restriction would apply to all products sold within the EU containing Retinol. We recommend considering Granactive Retinoid 2% or 5% from The Ordinary if you are concerned about use of Retinol products.

Caution: Retinoids can make the skin more sensitive to UV radiation. Sun protection is particularly important when using retinoids. This product must not be used in conjunction with other retinoids including retinol or retinoic acid. This product is not a treatment for acne. Acne-prone skin may experience a temporary increase in acne during the first few weeks of using any form of retinoid including those used in this formulation.

Note: When pregnant or breastfeeding, it is recommended to avoid any skincare products containing retinoids such as formulations with Granactive Retinoid or Retinol.
Apply a small amount to face in the PM as part of your skincare regimen, after water-based serums but before heavier treatments. Do not use with other retinoid treatments. Avoid unprotected solar exposure. Caution: Retinol can cause irritation, redness and peeling, especially around the eyes and mouth, in the early stages of treatment while skin builds tolerance. If persistent irritation occurs, cease use and consult a physician. Use only as directed on unbroken skin. Patch testing prior to use is advised. Keep out of reach of children. Refrigerate after opening. See how to combine multiple formulations from The Ordinary in a single regimen

Patch tests are an easy way to help predict if you may experience a negative initial reaction to a new product. It is recommended to perform a patch test before incorporating any new product into your regimen. We have outlined a general method for conducting your own patch test below based on the type of product.

  • Apply a small amount of the product onto a clean area of skin on the upper forearm.
  • Keep the area dry.
  • If the product has a specified duration of use, rinse off after this time has elapsed. Otherwise rinse off after 24 hours.
  • If any redness, burning, itching, blistering or irritation is observed at any time throughout the test, do not use the product.

For more product specific information, review our Patch Testing Guide.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 50? Not a problem! I layer this on top of the Niacinamide and use the Ha moisturizer on top, and find this combination keeps my face clear, fresh and bright every day. I know we are only supposed to use it in the evening, but a little in the morning makes for SUCH a nice base for my light foundation to go on smoothly, and I have not seen a negative to it after several months of doing so. At night, it feels incredible, I skip the moisturizer my face feels clean and fresh. I use the cleansing balm first. Love these products!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not suitable for oily skin Δεν δημιουργεί κανένα ερεθισμό, έχει μια θερμή αίσθηση αλλά δεν απορροφάται καθόλου από το δέρμα σου μένει έλα λάδι επάνω ακόμη και μισή ώρα μετά

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Could fry egg on my face after using this Each one I had to get off fave as quickly as possible. I thought I would need bar keepers cleanser to get it off. My skin is dry and then it was slippery. I did not use too much, as I tried a second time with less because I couldn’t believe what it did

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product at unbelievebly low price I use this retinoid on nights I'm not using my prescription retin A, more so in the summer, and when my skin needs something gentler. I also started using it on my forearms for hyperpigmentation. I'd love to know if this product can be mixed with your powder vitamin C and if they are not cancelling each other. I performed a patch test and there was absolutely no irritation, the powder dissolved reall well in this Retinol too. But would love to know for sure these two products are effective together.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Anti aging Hi, Finally, I decided to take the first step towards the anti-aging regime. Retinol turned out to be one of the most effective products. This didn't adversely react. Spreads beautifully and my skin feels pampered. Started using once a week and now I am using it atleast 5 times a week. Next step is Retin A.
